Dear Cucamonga SD Families,
On Monday, October 6, 2025, our educators were hard at work at Kagan Cooperative Learning Day 2. This day was part of our commitment to continuous professional development, and it focused on implementing the latest, most effective cooperative learning strategies in the classroom.
What We Learned and Why It Matters
This workshop was all about moving beyond traditional "group work" and using specific Kagan Structures that ensure every student is actively engaged. It was a productive day focused on techniques that directly benefit your child by creating a more positive and effective learning environment:
- Boosting Engagement: We mastered structures that "boost student learning and engagement with this powerful, proven approach". This includes fun activities designed to "pump up the fun, friendships, and liking for learning and each other with Classbuilding and Teambuilding".
- Building Skills: We focused on how to give students "the will to work together and the skills to do so successfully". These strategies provide students with key collaboration and communication skills they will need for future success.
- Creating a Caring Classroom: A core part of the training was learning to "prevent bullying, violence, and discipline problems by creating a cooperative, caring classroom". When students cooperate and work together effectively, the entire classroom climate improves.
We are excited to continue implementing these proven, easy-to-use cooperative learning methods every day.
Thank you for your support as we continue to invest in professional development that leads to a richer learning experience for your children!
Take care,
Michael Chaix, Ed.D.

🧡 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at CES through Literature
As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the powerful learning, celebrations, and connections that took place across our school community over the last few weeks. Throughout the month, students engaged in meaningful classroom lessons and discussions that highlighted the history, contributions, and diverse cultures of Hispanic and Latinx communities. These lessons weren’t just about facts—they were about developing empathy, understanding, and respect, which align with the Portrait of a Graduate traits of Social and Cross-Cultural Understanding.

Weekly Read-Alouds with Dr. Tremayne and Mrs. Ulloa
Each week, Mrs. Ulloa (our English Language Resource Teacher) and Dr. Tremayne connected the love of literature by recording and reading aloud books that honor Hispanic culture. The books selected celebrated identity, perseverance, and cultural awareness. These moments helped spark conversations about family, traditions, and values—and reminded students how books can build bridges between people and experiences.

🎁 Gift of Literature for Every Classroom
Each classroom received a gifted book to continue the celebration and learning year-round. The selected title, The Ocean is My River by Rio Cortez will serve as a lasting reminder of the importance of inclusion, identity, and empathy. Teachers and students enjoyed this new addition to every classroom library.

🌎 Portrait of a Graduate in Action
Through these experiences, students practiced seeing the world through others’ perspectives, honoring traditions different from their own, and celebrating what makes us all unique. These are not just events—they are steps toward developing the lifelong skills of empathy, cultural awareness, and global citizenship all while enhancing a love of reading and literature.
We are so proud of our Cubs for learning every day with open hearts and minds.
Let’s carry the lessons of this month into every month. Our community is stronger because of the diverse voices, stories, and experiences we share.
Con gratitud, Dr. TremaynePrincipal
