Dear Cucamonga School District Families,
This week, we had the pleasure of visiting THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL, where our transitional kindergarten students were fully immersed in a captivating robotics project. They had a blast creating their own unique monsters to "scare" their robots, echoing the sentiment from *Monsters, Inc.*: "They scare because they care." Their joy and curiosity highlighted the significance of hands-on learning and exploration at this young age.
Our Portrait of a Graduate emphasizes "creativity and innovation," and it was inspiring to see the students employing various idea generation techniques while reflecting on and assessing their concepts with a growth mindset.
In grades 1-3, we observed students engaging with the Orton-Gillingham reading program, focusing on phoneme identification, sentence formation, and learning Red Words. These high-frequency words are irregular and serve as a visual reminder of their uniqueness.
Additionally, as we strive to create a safe and healthy environment for our students, we want to spotlight Red Ribbon Week, taking place from October 23rd to October 31st. This important initiative encourages students to make healthy choices and embrace drug-free lifestyles, emphasizing the value of a supportive community that prioritizes wellness and safety.

Los Amigos Elementary School

At Los Amigos, our 5th grade girls have the option to participate in the Women on the Move Network program called Who’s Your Hero? The mission of this program is to provide girls ages 9 to 14 with an on-going series of age-appropriate experiences designed to give them tools, strategies and understandings which will help the girls make good decisions, build confidence, choose healthy activities and relationships, explore new ideas, make friends and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment. The 24-25 school year group is underway! Our young ladies are scheduled to meet every Tuesday from 2:50 - 4:10 p.m. The girls will explore many topics like everyday heroes, developing self-confidence, importance of education, conflict resolution, cultural and gender diversity, healthy relationships, nutrition and health, community service, effect of popular culture and media on youth, and bullying, women working in STEAM, and negative self-talk and strategies to overcome it. They will experience a field trip and have guest speakers. The group is led by Krista Furutan and 3 college-aged mentors.
WOMEN ON THE MOVE NETWORK is a Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation whose mission is to promote the empowerment of girls and young women through a series of planned experiential education programs so that they may become strong and healthy contributors to our community. All of their programs are designed to help the participants gain the understanding, strategies and tools to make good decisions, choose healthy activities and relationships, explore new ideas, strengthen positive friendships, and develop leadership skills, while having fun in a safe and welcoming environment.
